Sunset over Kjøllefjord

View towards the habour. The boat is leaving after dropping off tourists. Like in many other villages around Finnmark that used to live from the fishing business, people here now need to find other areas to make a living from. One of them is tourism.

Shadows of the past

Like nearly all villages in the Finnmark, Kjollefjord was completely burned down by the Nazis during WWII. Liv showed us a huge old German generator from these times, which is stored in the attic of one of the buildings. Through the window you see a Hurtigruten boat approaching the habour.

Foldalbruket

Foldalbruket used to be one of the many fish factories in Kjøllefjord. During the villages best days there where 17 of them coexisting, today there is only one still in use. Foldabruket, a 5 storey building is now a museum that shows a lot of artefacts from former times and features a history of the Finnmark. We met Liv Jorunn Nygård, who is the daily manager and director. She loved to listen to old stories and memories that people tell her since she was very young and she still does.

Windfarm

On the horizon you see the Kjøllefjord Windfarm. It was opened in October 2006, consists of 17 turbines and has an annual output of 150 GWh.

Worlds northernmost birch forest

A lot of reindeers flocks crossed our way, they act pretty calm when you have to wait for them to move from the road. We are parking next to the worlds northernmost birch forest. Due to the climate, the trees are less than one metre in height, but not as small as the ones growing in Svalbard.

Towards Kjøllefjord

Today the weather looks great. We are driving towards the village of Kjøllefjord, which is lying westwards.

Mehamn

This is Mehamn, which has an airport and is the administrative centre of the Gamvik municipality.
